OUR FOUNDERS

Don & Pam Leonard

Don & Pam arrived in the Philippines in January 1979, four years after being ordained as a Lutheran pastor in Wisconsin.  Since becoming members of Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1982, their family of six have moved more than 60 times as Don’s itinerating style of ministry kept him constantly on the go.  Along the way, the Leonards pioneered the use of vernacular videos in dozens of Asian language groups and developed a missions strategy called “God’s Two Carabao.”

In recent years, Don has stayed home (Lakeville, MN) to care for Pam as she battles cancer.  By God’s grace, the mission of Project Video continues to flourish with ethnic production teams now making and distributing gospel videos in seven Asian countries.
From Humble Beginnings…

Our History

It all began with one man. Don, as a Wycliffe missionary, was set with the task of trying to get an illiterate mountain people to engage with their newly translated Bible.

In the 80’s, Don discovered a ground-breaking new technology – Video.
Watch the video to see how this was a game changer for missions.

Motivating the Kankanaey to read and study the Bible was also a daunting challenge. Not because they didnʼt love their language. They did…they had never seen their language in print form before. Plus they were animists. This meant that instead of trusting in the sacrifice of Godʼs son for the payment of their sin, they sacrificed chickens and pigs to the anito; unseen spirits that controlled every aspect of their lives. Like all of us, the Kankanaey needed to come under the saving influence of Godʼs Word in order to be set free from their deep-seated customs and beliefs. And God provided an amazing way for this to happen. In fact, the Kankanaey were not only able to hear the Gospel in their own language … they could also see it! - Don Leonard
